Tea discovery [Feb. 24th, 2007|01:22 pm]
John
So... yesterday, I was making what sure to be my last honey-lemon tea of the day. In fact, I didn't have nearly enough lemon to do it right.

Are some of you extremely experienced tea drinkers starting to chuckle indulgently, realizing what this discovery was?

I usually add enough lemon so I can taste the lemon, you see... I mean, isn't that why you add it?

But just a tiny bit of lemon - not enough to taste it it as lemon - removed the bitter tannin taste of the tea, and made it quite enjoyable.

Still sick enough to need lots of this, but I'm not sure it's helping. I feel like I've got an infection *right above* my lungs, but I am coughing more, well, the term is "productively" now. That means I'm probably getting closer and closer to being shut of this thing, almost ten days after I started showing symptoms.

It's really annoying; I'm having a hard time sleeping, and I don't really want to leave the house because I keep having coughing fits that are close to uncontrollable, and make me dizzy.

Ah well. At least my head is clear, in both senses: my brain isn't fogged by sickness fatigue and my sinuses aren't feeling clogged up any longer.

You are right where I am: it started last week Tuesday and reached it's hight during last weekend. Slowly getting to the end of it, but boy is it annoying! Lots of hot tea indeed and since Kees picked it up from me we are running through the sudafed in an astonishing tempo. For some silly reason those tablets aren't on the Dutch market at all (no, why should you take a pill, you can use nose drops, can't you? Nope, Kees can't - they're giving him a headache). So soon I'll be begging one of you Merikans to send me a couple of boxes in the mail.

I don't drink a lot of hot tea, but I'm a big iced tea drinker, and I like lots of lemon.

I'm glad you're feeling better.

It might help to sleep with your head raised--sometimes I sleep on the sofa, with my whole upper body raised when I have lung stuff going on.

Btw, thank you for mentioning red beans and rice--I made some today, and I had never used brown rice before, but I like it better than white.

Do you need to see a doctor?

I'm really sorry to hear you're still being impacted by that cold. I hope you feel better.

Just a data point. When I was consistently sick with bronchitis and sinus and upper-respiratory infections last fall, my doctor told me that symptoms that don't get better over a period of about 10 to 14 days need to be looked at.

My last "cold" caused me to collapse from a coughing fit, and required three albuterol nebulizer treatments and, ultimately, three sequences of antibiotics. The good indicator is when the coughing gets bad enough to cause dizziness or (worse) blackouts, you should at least have a chat with an MD.

The only non-prescription things that helped me was increasing the amount of rest, fluid intake, and the humidity and amount of fresh ir in the house. Ultimately, we went with prescription antibiotics combined with OTC congestion control and an expectorant ....
