A question, and a report of a day of activity [Nov. 2nd, 2008|09:47 pm]
John
So, does anyone on my friends list want an EEE 4G Surf with a battery that is sadly too wimpy for my use?

I won't be offended if anyone offers to buy it for a price higher than the shipping/drop off cost, but I've come to the realization that I have no legitimate use for it, so I'm kind of in the mood to get rid of it. It comes with 2 gigs of memory (instead of the standard 512meg), and an 8 gig SD card, in addition to the 4gig solid state drive.

Be warned: the keyboard is small for people with large (or even average) sized hands.

Wow... it's been a surprisingly busy day. It started off with a realization that, yes, I gained a free hour of sleep. Then I called Pat, hoping to provide a bright, happy start to her day (and I think I succeeded :-) ), and decided to try to go swimming.

I did manage to pull myself to the gym and get in 25 minutes of swimming. The pool wasn't overfull, though I had to share a lane for a bit. Not a big deal, in the end.

(Exercise report: right now, 25 minutes of swimming a crawl stroke is enough to leave me feeling tired and it feels like a pretty serious chore. Also, on the ellipticals, I can do 5 1-minute intervals at 160-180rpm at level 13 - leaving me at the not-quite-kill-me-now state, with another 15-20 minutes of resting intervals at level 9. This will leave me risking getting tired during the day. I'm hoping in 2-3 weeks, 25 minutes of swimming will be a mildly serious chore, and I'll be able to do just as much interval training without feeling like sleeping afterwards.)

Then I did some more cleaning of both the kitchen and the living room. It might not look it, but I got a lot done.

Then I managed to finish off my trio of Halloween movies - The Fly, Van Helsing, and Wolf. All very good movies.

A neat mixture of work and play today, all in all.

I'll offer $100, with the understanding that I'll probably play with it for a day, add Microsoft software obtained cheaply from the company store, and sell it on eBay for at least twice as much. (Which I suggest you do instead.)

I also note that several people seem to be selling 3.5-5hr batteries on eBay for $35-60.

I'd be tempted by a longer life battery for a bit, but the biggest killer for me is the resolution is just a tad bit too small.

I'd kinda be interested in the Surf, actually. Wanna shoot me an email about what a fair offer would be?

(I can haz small hands.)

Dear John[1]

Last things first: I though van Helsing was a terrible movie. ( admittedly I only saw it on a Chinese pirate DVD copy with Korean subtitles - cheap at 1 Euro without any cover though ) so I may have been misled - maybe there were bits missing.
About the EEE I suspect packing and postage across the pond plus buying an additional charger would be prohibitive else I would be tempted. I should also hope your best offer is better than 150 US$ all included. ( else you can notify me as last resort before we let that piece of technology collect dust ;-) )
1.: just could not resist.

Re: Dear John[1]

Well, re: Van Helsing, as a "We got Hugh Jackman, and we can't do Wolverine, but we can do him as an action hero fighting weird creatures, so that's close enough!" movie, it was good. All I wanted was a good bit of adventure , and that's what I got.

(And I loved that for once, hitting a vampire in the heart wasn't portrayed as easy.)

Aw, poor little EEE - I was afraid it wouldn't stand up to your poweruser needs. I'd offer to buy it myself, except that it's just too damned small for my crappy eyesight.

Um, and "bright, happy start to the day" would be a big YES. (-:

Wish I could teleport up to spend tomorrow evening with you. I'm torn between hunkering down over my computer all evening and seeing if maybe Cap'n Slappy would like me to come over and watch the returns. Mostly, I just want to wake up Wednesday morning and find that I'm happy. (-:

That was me, obviously. I had to reinstall SeaMonkey on the work computer this morning and it ate my damned password manager. )-:

Well, the crazy thing is, the EEE would be just fine if the screen resolution (not necessarily the screen itself) was just a bit bigger. But it's not, and the battery issues are just too big for me.

Add me to the "interested in the Eee, if the price is right" list.

*Chuckle* John, I was going to e-mail you about the computer, but it looks like it'll have no problem finding a new home.
