Laptop availability? [Mar. 6th, 2004|03:41 pm]
John
Folks, right now, before you can forget, if you have the opportunity to find out about a used laptop that can run Windows/Office XP, please do so. I have about two weeks to try to find one for a friend who's dying of cancer.

I have about $200 I can throw at this, if that helps anyone.

I suppose Monday I'll ask around and find out if we can take up a collection in the office for him... there's 90 employees, and if each person was willing to donate $3, that'd be enough (with the extra $200) to buy a decent used laptop. But, if anyone out there is fortunate enough to have a 300+mhz laptop, with 128+megs of memory, that's ready to be thrown out, or sold cheaply, or whatever, please let me know.

I've checked around and found no spare laptops down here, love, but hit me when you need the money - I'd be glad to pitch in.

johnpalmer - I've got an old Inspiron 7500.

There are three problems with it:
  1. The batteries are both dead, so AC only. Batteries for it are on order $90, I believe.

  2. The structural integrity isn't too high; the hinges are kinda cracked. This is Dell's lemon, the beginning of the end of their high-quality years.

  3. It's a friggin' tank - it's around ten pounds, if I recall correctly.

But, that said, massively high screen resolution, CD-RW and floppy both, 12GB of disk, 384MB of RAM. And I'm in the right neighborhood.

That sounds ideal... could you email me at j palmer, the number 1, at ix, dot netcom dot com, or j palmer at lion inc dot com? I'd like to work out details. I can also get you Pete's number if you'd like to work things out with him (since he knows where he'll be a lot better than I do!)

If money is tight, by the way, I can purchase this and have some friends help out with the batteries to get it put together.
